Augusta Prep names Schlein next head varsity boys basketball coach

Augusta Prep is proud to announce the hiring of Kim Schlein as the head boys varsity basketball coach for the 2025-26 school year. She replaces Sam Gruber, who is stepping down after four years leading the program. In his tenure, Coach Gruber won a region championship and helped lead the program to just its third Final Four appearance this past season. He will remain at Augusta Prep, teaching Upper School history next school year.

“Coaching at Prep was an awesome experience and I will forever be thankful for the relationships that I was able to build during that time,” he said. “As I step away, I couldn't be more confident in Coach Schlein's leadership and the boys' work ethic leading to continued success for the program.”

Coach Schlein is no stranger to basketball - or success - on the court. She established herself as one of the top varsity girls basketball coaches in Georgia during her two-decade career at Cross Creek High School. Coach Schlein was named Region Coach of the Year seven times, leading Cross Creek to the 2020-21 state championship, when her program capped a 23-2 campaign with a 55-44 victory over Greater Atlanta Christian in the state title contest. Her teams won 20 or more games in 11 of her last 13 seasons at Cross Creek.
After retiring from the Richmond County School System last year, Coach Schlein joined Augusta Prep as a Lower School physical education teacher, head JV boys basketball coach, assistant boys basketball coach and head varsity track and field coach. This past season, she helped Coach Gruber lead the Cavaliers to their first state semifinal appearance in 11 years.

Coach Schlein said she looks forward to leading the varsity boys basketball team next season.
“Being a head coach is exciting. I love a good challenge and being competitive. Trying to out-strategize another coach is fun.” she said. “I coached JV last year and I enjoyed working with the guys. X's and O's are the same no matter what gender.”
