A University of South Carolina graduate with an English degree, Nic planned to start a career as an author of fiction writing. Things changed after a conversation last summer with his neighbor, Brad Hargrove, who serves as the general manager at WFXG. Nic started at WFXG FOX54 News in August 2025. He works Monday through Friday, beginning his shift at 2:30 p.m. weekdays. In his role as News Producer, Nic helps decide what goes on air for the 10 p.m. news, balancing where to place local, regional and national news in the broadcast.
“I really liked it immediately, mainly because of the people,” Nic said. “I’ve grown to really appreciate it.”
While Nic initially planned to become an author when he first attended college - something he still has in his future plans - Gray attended the University of Georgia to pursue a journalism degree. The two became fast friends when Gray joined Augusta Prep in sixth grade, a year after Nic became a Cavalier. While the two attended rival colleges, they continued to hang out and remained in contact. After Nic joined WFXG, Gray peppered him with questions about the job. Months later, Nic mentioned to Gray, who graduated in 2025 from the University of Georgia with a journalism degree, about a Multimedia Journalist position that had become available.
“Nic took the job and told me that he immediately loved it,” said Gray, who started at the news station in March 2026. “The people are fantastic. It’s a fun environment, That’s what drew me in. Everyone here welcomed me, and I felt at home.”
Gray works a nighttime shift that runs parallel to Nic’s. While Nic remains at the station behind the camera throughout the day, Gray goes out into the community and interviews people. He said his two most favorite stories so far have been one about endangered species in the Savannah River - a piece that has received more than 12,000 views online - and another about covering the announcement of the new Augusta Lynx hockey team and meeting co-owner Tim Tebow.
“I’m really happy with this job,” Gray said. “I love the creativity. I like being able to get out from behind the desk and being able to do things and speak to people every day.”
As for their time at Augusta Prep, Nic and Gray both said they had some great memories, especially of the faculty. Nic said Rich Bland’s Middle School history class was one of his favorites, along with Dr. Lollie Becton's AP Psychology course. Gray said Franklin Kennedy’s Latin class was his favorite, a course that helped him at UGA. Both Nic and Gray each credited Augusta Prep’s English department, especially the Advanced Placement courses, for helping prepare them for college.
“Nic and I both felt confident in college with our ability to write,” Gray said. “Writing papers in college and now script writing where I have to pump something out, that definitely helped prepare me.”
The 24-year-old Augusta Prep alums are huge sports fans - Gray enjoys University of Georgia sports, along with the Atlanta pro sports teams, while Nic is a fan of his collegiate alma mater, as well as the Washington Commanders. One of their hopes is WFXG FOX 54 News starting a dedicated sports department in the future and them being able to tap into their passions. In the meantime, they said enjoy what they do for a living.
