Augusta Prep senior wins STAR district competition, advances to state

Augusta Prep senior Priya Sharma became the seventh student in school history to win the STAR region competition on March 15 at a banquet presented by First Baptist Church. Priya will advance to compete in the state competition on April 24 in Duluth, Ga., against winners from 17 regions across Georgia.

Last month, Priya was recognized as the Columbia County co-STAR student for the 2022-2023 school year. Priya became the first Augusta Prep student in seven years to earn this distinction.
The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Program, presented by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators, recognizes students who have the highest SAT score in their class and are also in the top 10 percent of their class based on grade point average.

Priya won the Region 7 competition, which consists of students representing 14 counties around the Augusta area, including Columbia, Richmond, Burke, McDuffie, Lincoln, Warren, Washington, Wilkes and others.

Priya selected Eric Miller, who teaches Ceramics, AP Studio Art, Motorsports Engineering and Technical Theater as her STAR teacher. They both were recognized at the STAR Student and Teacher reception.
