Augusta Prep senior Connell signs Division I football offer

Augusta Prep senior Sam Connell signed a football offer this afternoon to play for Mercer University in Macon, Ga.
At Augusta Prep, Connell was a three-year football starter before missing all of the 2023 season due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury. In his football tenure for the Cavaliers, Connell was one of the Augusta area's top players, starring at wide receiver, running back, defensive back, kicker and punter. Also in his time at Augusta Prep, he played basketball and soccer.

Connell will suit up this fall for Mercer, an NCAA Division I school that plays in the Southern Conference. The Bears went 9-4 in 2023, advancing to the second round of the FCS playoffs.

"If I didn't go to this school (Augusta Prep), I really don't think I would've been presented with this opportunity," Connell said. "Going here (Augusta Prep) did a lot for me. Not only was I able to play all four years, which I wouldn't have been able to do if I went anywhere else, I was able to build a really big bond with a lot of people. That's special."
