Mark Twain Tonight
September 30-October 1,
2010
Hull Fine Arts Center
7PM
An
Evening with Mark Twain is patterned after Hal Holbrook’s famously
successful Mark Twain Tonight!, which opened in New York at the
Longacre Theatre in 1966 after years on the road touring and ran for 85
performances. It won Mr. Holbrook a Tony for Best Actor in that year.
Mr. Akins created his own rendition in 1976 while teaching at The Stony
Brook School and helping to found Theatre Three, a regional theatre
based in Port Jefferson, Long Island. He landed the role by stepping in
at the last moment for an actor who was unable to fulfill his commitment
to the part. It was at this time that Head of School Jack Hall saw the
show, and it was the memory of that experience that spurred him to
request that Neil consider reprising the role to bring to Augusta Prep
during its anniversary year.
